Ad Hominem: Attacking the Person Instead of the Argument

Ad hominem is a Latin term meaning "to the person." It describes a logical fallacy where someone attacks the character, motives, or attributes of an individual making an argument rather than addressing the argument itself. Instead of engaging with logic or evidence, the response is aimed at discrediting the person to undermine their position.

Example:"You can't trust what John says about finance because he's been bankrupt before."

This dismissal ignores the substance of John's argument and instead shifts the focus to his personal history. Ad hominem attacks are common in debates, politics, and emotionally charged arguments as a way to divert attention from the actual issue.

How It Manifests in Narcissistic Relationships

In relationships with narcissists, ad hominem attacks are frequently used as a manipulation tool to invalidate the other person’s concerns, thoughts, or feelings. Rather than addressing the content of a discussion, a narcissist may attack your credibility, past mistakes, or even your emotions to maintain control and avoid accountability.

Example: if you express a legitimate concern, the response might be: "You're just too sensitive. No one else would react this way."

This tactic serves to shift the focus away from the real issue and make you the problem, ensuring that meaningful discussion never happens. Recognizing ad hominem attacks can help you stay focused on the facts and not get pulled into personal attacks designed to manipulate or silence you.
